Rock-Line.lab is an experimental music education project from Perm. This year the laboratory expanded its reach and came to Yekaterinburg. The Yekaterinburg edition was organized by the interregional public organization Composers’ Union.

#### The theme of the 2014 laboratory was “Music for Film,” explored by two professional composers: Alexander Pantykin and Micki Meuser.

*Micki Meuser (Germany) is a composer, arranger and sound producer. Since 2006, he has headed the German Film Composers’ Congress and has written soundtracks for films starring international celebrities including Daniel Craig, Kirsten Dunst and Lynn Redgrave.*

*Alexander Pantykin (Russia) is a composer known as the “grandfather of Ural rock” and a member of the NIKA Academy of Cinematographic Arts. He has written music for many Russian films and musicals, founded the legendary band Urfin Dzhus, holds the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, chairs the Sverdlovsk Region Composers’ Union, and belongs to both the Union of Cinematographers and the Theatre Union.*







The laboratory participants—young composers, teachers, sound engineers and performing musicians—had a unique opportunity to see every stage of a film composer’s work on music for film and television during Micki Meuser’s workshop. Alexander Pantykin and Micki Meuser discussed both the creative and technical sides of writing music for film and television and showed several video examples of their work.

At the laboratory finale, two groups—[Rained](/en/artist/rained) from Perm and [SoulTrane](/en/artist/soultrane) from Krasnokamsk—presented their own musical accompaniment for two silent films by early twentieth-century director Ernst Lubitsch: the 1918 drama **The Eyes of the Mummy** (**Die Augen der Mumie Ma**) and the 1919 comedy **The Oyster Princess** (**Die Austernprinzessin**).

Rock-Line.lab became a truly unique educational project, giving young composers and musicians the practical knowledge they need.
